Statement

Over time and without a physical presence, past experiences become corrupted and altered in a person’s memory. Details dwindle, perspectives shift, turns of phrase and written text swap in and out, but the spaces are still mentally preoccupying despite their state of flux. Memory is not a tape being played but a new construction. Cardinal facts are woven with personal interpretation, misattributed details, and generalizations, all filtered through present-day biases and events following the moment in question every time an event is recalled. How can we determine what will persist, what will be added, and what will fade?

Hyman’s recent works are documentations of transient scenes and reflections from their Southern Baptist childhood, reimagined through a present-day, gender-queer context. Initially inspired by a paranoia that if moments are not continuously reviewed they will be lost, the depictions serve as a way to safely possess and preserve these impressions when their physical tokens and places are lost to time or distance.
