Maria Blokhina

My journey as an artist and designer began with a love for languages, which opened doors to travel and immerse myself in various cultures. Living in Moscow, exploring Europe, and spending time in Taiwan, I gradually discovered my passion for creativity and design. These experiences fueled my desire to pursue a career in the arts, leading me to formal studies at the University of Florida, where I connected with a community of artists and designers who helped shape my artistic voice.

My work exists at the intersection of art, design, fashion, and sustainability. Drawing from diverse cultural experiences and partially self-taught techniques, I create pieces that are not only visually striking but also rooted in eco-conscious principles. Sustainability is at the core of my practice, from recycling and repurposing materials to considering the impact and end-of-life of each creation.

In today's world, where the impact of pollution and waste on our environment has become increasingly evident, I felt compelled to explore creative ways to contribute to a more sustainable future. My journey as a creative took a transformative turn when I began to focus on the concept of repurposing and upcycling materials that would otherwise be discarded. This led me to create Sadaveena, a collection of handmade fabric plants that embody the spirit of renewal and sustainability.

Artist Statement

Sadaveena, my latest collection of handmade fabric plants, represents the culmination of my creative journey. Through these unique, one-of-a-kind sculptures, I seek to merge artistic expression with sustainable living, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities of design.

Each piece in the Sadaveena collection is crafted from discarded fabrics, once destined for landfills, now given a new lease on life. By turning unused textiles into nature-inspired forms, I aim to symbolize the process of rebirth and regeneration, highlighting the potential for beauty and transformation in materials that might otherwise be considered waste.

Every fabric plant is unique, a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects both the history of the material and the natural world that inspires it. I meticulously select and shape each fabric to create intricate textures and forms that resemble the delicate yet resilient structures found in nature. The process itself is deeply meditative and purposeful, as I strive to honor the materials and the environment through my work.

Through Sadaveena, I hope to offer more than just decorative objects; I want to invite people to reconsider their relationship with the materials around them and to see the potential for beauty and creativity in the things we might otherwise discard. I believe that art has the power to inspire change, and through Sadaveena, I hope to contribute to a more thoughtful and sustainable world.
