Artist Statement

In her film photography series "WAS IT JUST A DREAM?" T.B.H. aims to show the world what we can make from our mistakes, and how they can ignite our imaginations if we give them space to do so.

She highlights this concept by showcasing images from a roll of film where she unknowingly double-exposed a family trip from this summer in southern Spain over a trip from the previous summer spent in southern California with her best friend.

These two different moments in time, occurring on two opposite sides of the world, are forever merged together on one roll of film by pure happenstance. By being unable to physically remove the images from one another, the photographer was faced with learning a valuable lesson in the power of persistence, patience, and acceptance.

The locations, although similar in their coastal, warm natures, layered over one another, begin to create a new landscape that feels odd and vaguely questionable. However, the longer you look, the more familiar the spaces begin to feel, as they start to resemble a conglomeration of your own fading memories.

Through this film photography series, T.B.H. wants to leave the viewer with a fleeting feeling of nostalgia—reminding them of the places where their own special memories occurred, and inviting them to think of how they’d feel if able to go back in time and live them all over again.
