In Defense of Tenderness: Genevieve Cohn at Hashimoto Contemporary

Create! Magazine is pleased to spotlight In Defense of Tenderness, a solo exhibition by Boston-based artist Genevieve Cohn, on view from May 3 through May 31, 2025, at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Genevieve Cohn’s richly chromatic paintings operate as moments within a continuous narrative—one that merges mythic imagination with grounded realities. Her compositions depict communities of women engaged in acts of care, construction, and connection. Drawing inspiration from the Women’s Land Army, female separatist communities, fairy tales, and literary fiction, Cohn builds a world that is both fantastical and historically resonant.

The artist writes, “Figures move through layered environments, often engaged in building fences, planting gardens, and crafting protective structures. In the periphery—glimpses of unease that echo the instability of our current moment. Yet the focus remains on the figures: how they continue, how they hold, how they build.”

These works invite viewers into a space of imagined solidarity, where the act of tending—to the land and to one another—becomes a powerful form of resistance and renewal.
