Buket Savci: Beautiful Aliens Exhibition
Kravets Wehby Gallery is pleased to present Beautiful Aliens, a solo exhibition by Buket Savci. This new body of work explores themes of resilience, connection, and community, capturing the essence of New York City’s survivalist spirit.
Having lived and worked in Brooklyn, Savci brings a deep understanding of the city’s unique, demanding nature. Her experience has shaped this series, which portrays the delicate balance of interdependence among individuals. The vibrant, immersive paintings feature groups of people arranged in close, comforting spirals, adorned in bright, patterned clothing and holding personal objects, like stuffed animals, that serve as symbols of protection and connection. These vivid compositions create an ecosystem of care and hope, warding off negativity through color and collective presence.
Savci’s approach emphasizes seeing and celebrating the inherent goodness in people. Her creative process often involves gathering friends, acquaintances, and strangers to pose together, encouraging a shared vulnerability and trust. The resulting works are rich with details—dramatic lighting, tattoos, bold patterns, and ornate jewelry—that highlight the complexity and diversity of urban life. These paintings become a testament to the power of human connection and the beauty found in shared moments.
A recent earthquake in New York evoked memories for Savci of her hometown of Izmit, Turkey, where she experienced a catastrophic quake that left deep impacts. Reflecting on her journey from Turkey to the United States, Beautiful Aliensembodies the resilience of individuals who build new lives, seizing opportunities like the green card lottery to pursue long-held aspirations. Having transitioned from a career as a landscape architect in Istanbul, she reinvented herself as a painter, earning a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art.
Beautiful Aliens offers a compelling vision of human strength and interconnectedness, inviting viewers into a world where basic needs are honored and judgment has no place. Through this series, Savci celebrates the magic of human connection, portraying the ways strangers can become allies in a shared, empathetic space.
The public is invited to the opening reception on October 17 to experience Buket Savci’s beautifully layered and richly detailed paintings.
