Exploring Chaos and Creativity: Stephen Morrison’s Dog Show #4: House Broken

Hashimoto Contemporary is thrilled to unveil its latest solo exhibition, Dog Show #4: House Broken, by Brooklyn-based artist Stephen Morrison. On view from January 15th through February 8th, 2025, this immersive exhibition invites viewers into Morrison’s vivid world of chaos, memory, and playful imperfection.

Finding Harmony in Disorder

Inspired by the artist’s own upbringing, Dog Show #4: House Broken reflects on the lively disorder of domestic life. Through painting and sculpture, Morrison transforms his childhood memories of cluttered creativity—dancing, crafting, and half-finished projects—into a celebration of imperfection. Amid this chaos, he uncovers unexpected moments of harmony, where disorder finds its rhythm.

Divided Realities

The exhibition unfolds in two dynamic parts:

The Main Gallery
Seven trompe l’oeil paintings take center stage, presenting mundane household items—shopping bags, broken dolls, magazine clippings—as objects of reverence. Morrison’s signature dog characters embody various emotional states, appearing precarious yet relatable. Interspersed among the paintings are Morrison’s “clump spirits,” sculptural assemblages of discarded items stacked and cracked, reflecting the fragility and humor of everyday life.

The Second Gallery
A more intimate installation reveals an imagined domestic interior, populated by miniature self-portraits of the artist as bumbling construction workers. These figures, lazy, distracted, or comically inept, satirize Morrison’s own habits and flaws. This self-deprecating humor transforms guilt and imperfection into something warm, human, and oddly hopeful.

A Celebration of Imperfection

Through his unique approach to storytelling and art-making, Morrison challenges the notion of perfection. His works capture the beauty in life’s messiness and invite viewers to find value in the flaws of their own daily existence.
