Marryam Moma's Solo Exhibition: Wunderland Noir: Dreamscapes in Utopia

Buckhead Art & Company Debuts Marryam Moma's Solo Exhibition: Wunderland Noir: Dreamscapes in Utopia

Atlanta, GA – October 25, 2024 – Buckhead Art & Company proudly announces Wunderland Noir: Dreamscapes in Utopia, a solo exhibition by Tanzanian-Nigerian artist Marryam Moma, running from November 29, 2024, to December 20, 2025. Located in the heart of Atlanta, this exhibition reimagines the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland through a vivid Afro-visual lens, celebrating Black joy, familial connection, and cultural resilience.

Moma's analog collages create portals into a wonderland where fantasy and heritage intertwine. Drawing from her East African roots, her works explore themes of rest, growth, and self-actualization through intricate layers of black-and-white silhouettes, vibrant florals, and luxurious mixed media. The result is a celebration of Black identity and storytelling that is both magical and deeply rooted in cultural authenticity.

Reimagining Black Narratives in Wunderland Noir

Through Wunderland Noir, Moma reframes Lewis Carroll’s iconic tale as an Afro-visual novella, infusing it with motifs from her Tanzanian heritage and contemporary Black culture. Her art juxtaposes striking silhouettes with gold leaf, regional African flora, and layered textures to create surreal dreamscapes. These works not only celebrate joy and opulence but also challenge traditional narratives surrounding Black experiences.

“Each piece is a meditation on Black joy, luxury, and opulence,” Moma explains. “Through this exhibition, I invite viewers to step into a wonderland where fantasy, cultural heritage, and Black storytelling converge in harmonious celebration.”

The Artistic Process: From Daily Life to Dreamscapes

Moma’s creative process is deeply intuitive, beginning with a collection of materials inspired by her interactions with people, architecture, and societal dialogues. Her approach involves a rigorous subtractive method, paring down visual elements until each collage resonates with emotional depth and clarity.

Her architectural background informs her precise layering techniques, which incorporate traditional African textiles, wildlife motifs, and ceremonial elements. Among these, the clove—a symbol of purification and healing in Tanzanian culture—features prominently, adding layers of meaning to her works. Surreal manifestations of East African wildlife, such as giraffes and flamingos, further enrich her collages, lending an otherworldly quality to her narratives.

A Celebration of Collaboration and Community

The exhibition also highlights Moma’s collaborations with her family and creative team. Emmy®-nominated Creative Director Rodney LoveJones of GRAPHITE HOUSE lends his expertise to the presentation, blending surrealistic design elements with Moma’s bold aesthetic. Curated by Karimah McFarlane, Wunderland Noir reflects a collective effort to bridge art, culture, and Black storytelling.

“Moma’s collages are healing to the eyes, heart, and soul,” says Lorraine West, a fine jewelry designer. “Her works come to life through her exploration of beauty, color, shape, and form.”

An Invitation to Dream

Visitors to Wunderland Noir will be immersed in a visual conversation that invites reflection on resilience, interconnectedness, and the possibilities of an imagined future. Moma’s work celebrates the richness of shared African and Black American cultures while offering a space for dialogue and inspiration.
