Artist Statement
My work reimagines personal narratives of culture and belonging, depicting interrogative questions and self-told affirmations. Connection through contrast is an important physical and metaphorical trait in my work—from penetrating brown stain to white wash; from smoothly painted black-and-white hands to their tactile and colorful surroundings; and from painted objects that are constructed through relief to the paints and stains that are absorbed by the surface.
Through fantastical anecdotes, I explore how differences exist in the same space harmoniously to reflect on what it means to integrate versus assimilate.
