Betsy Wild
As a child, I discovered my artistic voice sculpting birds out of playdough and sketching animal scenes. With the support of my family, I pursued art through formative experiences, including summers at Ringling College of Design and a transformative year at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I earned a BFA in illustration from the Art Center College of Design, where my illustrations often took the form of clay sculptures.
In my professional career, I became a Creative Director for a product development company, designing fashion apparel for brands like Disney, Hard Rock, Universal Studios, and Cabela's. Despite professional success, my passion for sculpting persisted, leading me to participate in art festivals until family growth became my primary focus. To balance quality family time with creativity, I founded We Craft Box, an award-winning kids' craft subscription business.
Amid the bustling world of entrepreneurship, an undeniable need to create art for myself drew me back to the sculptor's studio. My art is a testament to the delicate interplay of emotions and the perpetual search for balance in the intricate dance of existence.
Artist Statement
My work explores animals as emotional conduits, weaving narratives that reflect the intricate connections in human relationships. These animal characters embody the nuanced nature of our personal stories, much like the layers, memories, trauma, and experiences that shape our identities.
In my current journey, animals personify interactions with fruits symbolizing relationships. How the animal engages with the fruit offers a compelling depiction resonating differently with each viewer, reflecting the complexities of human connections and the stories we tell ourselves.
Clay is my chosen medium, allowing me to mold and manipulate it with my hands, transforming it from a soft, responsive material to a lasting embodiment of my artistic expression. This journey of the clay, evolving from malleable to permanent, fascinates me.
I invite viewers to connect with the emotional resonance of the animal allegories, contemplating the layers of their own truths and relationships.
