Artist Statement

All my collages speak from my experience as a Black woman responding to my environment in some way, shape, or form.

Each piece I create begins with a strong personal connection to a short phrase, song lyrics, poetry, dreams, or ideas that matures into a deeper "story" in my imagination. Being connected to this story is essential for me to breathe life into the work. Each of my pieces becomes richer, deeper, and more complex by layering images upon images, adding cut papers, and at times, paint, pencil, ink, and the written word.

I work on creating narrative collages by interweaving and superimposing a plethora of symbols and forms — from hearts and flowers to humans, animals, landscapes, letters, and words. The elements flourish in a reverie of color. Every collage I create is a prompt for the viewer’s mind to go on their own journey.
