Katy M. Vaughn
I am a Miami-based abstract artist, designer, mama, and cloud obsesser. My art is inspired by nature and the idea of living in flow with both nature and daily life. When we get into the flow state, we are connected.
I have been an artist my entire life. I remember gluing my crayon drawings to the flowered wallpaper of my childhood bedroom. In our home, it was a cardinal sin to buy a birthday card or Halloween costume; we designed and created everything.
After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from George Washington University, I decided to embark on a more ‘practical career’ and obtained a Master of Architecture from the University of Miami. After five years of working in misery at an architecture firm, I opted out. From 2010 to 2019, I found myself off-purpose as a restaurateur and did very little artwork. I did, however, learn some massive life lessons—the biggest being to listen to my intuition.
I am now back in my studio daily, exploring, layering, and overlapping thoughts and color. When not in the studio, you can find me hunting for seashells or surfing with my daughter, Neilly.
Artist Statement
Through my paintings, I explore literal and philosophical ideas about living and working in flow—a balance between intention and letting go. Each artwork offers an immersive experience, encouraging audiences to use their imagination and memory to take them to a new place of solace or wonder.
I use gravity, brushwork, and spontaneous gesture to create works evocative of nature and dreams. Vibrant pigments and dynamic movement naturally evolve through my process. My intent is to evoke a sense of joy, wonder, and contemplation. It is my sincere hope that my work resonates with viewers and inspires them to watch clouds move, waves wash to the shore, snow quietly fall, and petals unfold.
