Mark S. Thomas

I am an abstract artist with an extensive background in fiber art and commercial design. I work out of my Oakland, California studio, where I create acrylic and mixed media works on wood panel or paper, blending random and intentional mark-making. I enjoy working in a variety of formats, including drawing, painting, and painted collage.


Artist Statement

My work is primarily driven by my love of color and abstract organic patterns. I’m endlessly intrigued by observing color relationships and the ways in which color can affect one’s mood and well-being. I like to let the paint and random patterns prompt and propel me throughout the compositional development of my work, intermingling chance and deliberate mark-making sporadically throughout the painting process. I’m always searching for a balance between spontaneity and careful editing in an effort to replicate the variability of repetition found in natural and biological patterns in nature.
