AQ Volume IV Artist: Christina Contaldi is an American artist based in New Jersey. Born to an artist mother and a lawyer father, she was gifted with a balance of creativity and logic. However, it took half a lifetime to harmonize these parts of herself.

Christina graduated in 2003 with a degree in Visual Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She built a career in Graphic Design, working as a Senior Designer for a global law firm in NYC for nearly a decade before transitioning to a tech start-up as an Art Director. Eventually, she returned to her roots as a painter, reclaiming her passion for hands-on artistry.

Her work reflects her multi-passionate nature and is inspired by the simplicity and complexity of nature. Integrating themes of environment, memory, emotion, and spirituality, Christina embraces constant evolution in her art.

What inspired you to become an artist, and how did you decide to commit to this path?

Growing up surrounded by art supplies and creative experiences, my mother—a professional artist—nurtured my love for art. While my early life celebrated creativity, I shifted focus to Graphic Design for financial security after art school. After years in the corporate world, I felt disconnected from my true self. Leaving that environment to return to painting was transformative.

Creating personal art is integral to my happiness and identity. I believe everyone has an inherent creativity. Watching my children’s natural artistic expression reminded me of this and encouraged me to embrace art fully.

Could you share the story or concept behind your recent work?

My latest collection, The Earth Collection, is inspired by my reconnection with nature after years spent indoors in corporate settings. Rediscovering nature’s grounding and healing properties reminded me of its importance. This collection is a tribute to nature’s beauty and cycles, encouraging viewers to embrace its tranquility and integrate its calming presence into their lives.

What was the most challenging part of your path so far? How are you navigating this obstacle?

My biggest challenge has been managing my inner critic and overcoming perfectionism. I’ve learned to embrace my authenticity and see imperfections as part of the process. Letting go of the need to be “perfect” has freed me to create more genuinely.

What role does experimentation and exploration play in your artistic practice?

Experimentation is central to my practice—I approach my work with curiosity and playfulness, constantly trying new techniques and ideas. I often work on multiple paintings simultaneously, allowing for freedom and reducing pressure on any single piece. This method fosters creative breakthroughs and ensures I keep evolving.

Do you have any start or stop rituals before creating?

Carving out uninterrupted time is essential for me as a mother with a busy life. I prepare by organizing my space, stocking supplies, and cleaning brushes. Once I start, mixing paints and moving my body help me get into the flow. Prioritizing art in my schedule ensures that inspiration comes naturally.

What message do you hope your art conveys to the world?

I hope my art fosters environments of peace and acceptance, helping people feel at ease and recharge. Creating nurturing spaces allows for deeper self-connection, appreciation of beauty, and healing.
