Artist Statement
Bauc’s Cloud – Joanna's d'Arc series of paintings is dedicated to the heroic figure of a woman. The historical existence of this character and its mythological function have not influenced the perception of women and their depiction in art. The warrior woman, a figure with an opposing fate, did not find a worthy representation in paintings. On the other hand, her heirs through the centuries have become and continue to be a cultural ornament.
The series consists of sixteen large-format realistic representations. In the first installment of this project, which took place in May 2021 at the painter's studio, Bauc presented sixteen paintings of women, drawn from iconic representations of female acts. The artist utilized works by Manet, Froud, Titian, and Rembrandt. The painter repeated the four motifs four times, maintaining the freedom of interpretation, supported by the artist's chromaticism, scale, and central composition, which largely influenced the abstraction of the representations. Collections of large-format works were accompanied by portraits painted on a smaller scale. The portraits adhered to the iconic motifs of the acts, which form the essence of the first edition of the project.
